Accumulated Depreciation

The total amount of depreciation expense that has been allocated against an asset since it was acquired, recorded as a contra asset account that offsets the asset’s value on the balance sheet.

For example, if a piece of equipment originally cost $100,000 and has been depreciated $30,000 over 5 years, its accumulated depreciation is $30,000.
