Fictitious Name

A made-up business name that is different than the legal name of the business entity, individual owner, or partners, used for conducting commercial activities, and requires registration with state or local authorities.

For example, John Smith as a sole proprietor could register to do business as “Smith’s Automotive” rather than using his personal name.
