Grandfather Clause

A provision that allows an individual or entity to be exempt from a new law or regulation because of circumstances that existed before the law or regulation took effect.

For example, older power plants may be grandfathered in under new environmental regulations, allowing them to continue operating without adding costly new pollution controls that newer plants must install.
