Standard Industrial Classification (SIC)

A numerical scheme devised in 1937 by the U.S. government to categorize business establishments by industry using a four-digit code for statistical analysis and regulatory oversight purposes.

For example, automobile manufacturers would be classified under SIC code 3711 for motor vehicle and car bodies.
