A time-limited, legally enforced right granted by a government to an inventor to exclusively make, use, or sell an invention, in exchange for public disclosure of how the invention works.

For example, Alexander Graham Bell obtained a patent in 1876 for the telephone, which gave him exclusive rights to commercialize this new form of communication during the patent’s term.
